Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Radiology Chair Office, is seeking a Scientist I. The primary responsibility of the Scientist I is to conduct assigned research projects independently, train any onboarded staff in basic experimental protocols of the lab, and general laboratory manager responsibilities.

General Responsibilities

  • To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures in a particular field of specialization.
  • To plan, coordinate and conduct research.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Following instructions and discussions with principal investigator, designs research protocols, including developing and extending procedures for the collection, verification, and management of data.
  2. Conducts literature searches related to research project.
  3. Provides training to trainees and staff for cell culture and animal model work, as well as assays of the lab such as those that utilize stable isotopes, work with radioisotopes, image acquisition and analysis.
  4. Works in a team environment to complete research projects.
  5. Writes and submits papers, progress reports, and grants based on individually-directed research projects to publications and committees for publication or presentation to peers. This is done independently for individually-directed research.
  6. General lab manager responsibilities such as ordering reagents, accepting packages, aliquoting reagents and maintaining equipment.
  7. Synthesizing novel preclinical stable isotope and PET radiotracer pairs (19F/18F, 11C/13C).
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Annual Salary Range $63,125.00 - $72,000.00

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
  • OR M.D. and Master's degree.
  • OR Master's degree and four (4) years of related experience
  • OR Bachelor's degree and six (6) years of related experience

Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

  • Ph.D in chemistry, with experience working with or a desire to learn radiochemistry is preferred.
  • In-vivo small animal handling skills: inhalation anesthesia; injections (IP, IV); familiarity with IACUC protocols and guidelines and in vivo study conduct is preferred.
  • Proficiency in western blotting is preferred.
  • Comfortable with handling radioactivity for preclinical experimentation (e.g., typical isotopes F-18, C-11) is preferred.
  • Ability to conduct studies, design experimental plans, and perform data analysis independently.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems, interpret data, and communicate results to peers, superiors, and trainees.
  • Experience with cell culture is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills are preferred.
  • Good and recent publication record in the fields of cancer research, radiochemistry and molecular imaging are preferred.
  • Degree in chemistry, biology, physics, or related.
  • Experience with PET or SPECT imaging.
  • Experience with radiochemistry.
