Compensation:

$37.00 / hour

General Responsibilities:

To possess theoretical and technical knowledge in specialized fields of patient care and to perform services such as consultant, clinician, educator, researcher, and, as needed, program coordinator. To identify and recommend clinical standards/standards of practice for patient populations. Key Duties & Responsibilities

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Provides clinical consultation to patients, visitors, staff and students. Develops clear, concise educational content for patients, patient families/significant others and/or other healthcare personnel/staff. Evaluates patient needs and provides patient care.

2. Educates the patient and/or patient's caregiver, other healthcare personnel, dietetic interns, medical residents, students and/or community representatives on diabetes and diabetes related topics, oral hypoglycemic agents, insulin including, but not limited to use, administration/injection, storage, and proper disposal, insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitors (CGM), nutrition, nutrition related topics and/or drug-nutrient interactions.

3. Assists/participates in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the American Diabetes Association's Diabetes Self-Management Education Support (DSMES) Program. Utilizes quality improvement processes to evaluate the effectiveness of services provided.

4. Performs nutrition assessments/evaluations and provides recommendations for patients as appropriate. Patient populations may include, but not be limited to transplant (predominantly pre[1]transplant, outpatient), diabetes mellitus and other non-diabetes mellitus medical conditions.

5. Participates in UAB Medicine committees and initiatives as assigned and/or as schedule permits.

6. Displays effective communication skills and interpersonal skills.

7. Supports pillar, quality and fiscal goals of the clinical nutrition cost center, the department, and the Page 2 of 3 institution (UAB Medicine). Consistently demonstrates personal accountability for professional growth.

8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Human Nutrition, medical Dietetics/Dietetics, or a closely related field such as Food Systems Management required. Master s degree preferred. Two (2) years of experience as a diabetes educator preferred. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Currently a Registered Dietitian (RD) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration required. Licensed as a Dietitian by the Alabama State Board of Examiners for Dietetics & Nutritionists required. Currently a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) or must be obtained within eighteen (18) months of employment.
