The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Med - Pulmonary/Allergy/Critical Care, is seeking a Researcher V. The lab will be investigating the roles and functions of extracellular vesicles from immune cells in inflammatory lung diseases, like COPD, ARDS, and Cystic fibrosis. The lab uses rodent animal models, mice and rats, to study the effects of these vesicles on disease pathogenesis. The position will require understanding of extracellular vesicle biology of immune cells, including the isolation of neutrophils and macrophages from peripheral blood, and the isolation of extracellular vesicles through various means, including ultracentrifugation and precipitation.

General Responsibilities

• To be responsible for the overall operation of the lab.
• To oversee projects within the lab.
• To contribute to the design, interpretation and writing of grant proposals and publications.
• To supervise a research team, direct and teach lab practices.
• To manage lab equipment and supplies.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

1. Assumes significant responsibility for the overall operation of the lab.
2. Oversees projects within the laboratory.
3. Monitors results, detects, and reports unusual outcomes.
4. Develops and implements modifications and provides reports or other consultation to management.
5. Contributes to the design, interpretation and writing of grant proposals and publications.
6. Supervises and oversees maintenance of lab equipment.
7. Orders and supervises lab supplies.
8. Uses advanced knowledge of lab practices to direct and teach others by developing guidelines and conducting face-to-face/virtual training.
9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Annual Salary Range $49,004.80 - $95,500.00

• Doctorate in a related field and one (1) year of related experience
• OR Master's degree in a related field and three (3) years of related experience
• OR Bachelor’s degree in related field and five (5) years of related experience

Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

• Experience in tissue/cell culture, western blot analysis, flow cytometry, and enzyme kinetics will be extremely helpful to the position.
• Prefer PhD in biological or molecular science related degree.
• Experience in mouse surgery, including acquisition of BALF and lung removal for histology required.
