Health Physics Lead

The primary accountabilities below are intended to describe the general content of and requirements of this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.

Description

Performs Lead/Advanced level duties in the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public. Provides in-depth scientific and technical reviews of detailedapplications for new radioactive material licenses, renewals, amendments, and termination requests.Conducts on-site inspections of new facilities, i.e., hospitals, industrial firms, medical offices, dentalfacilities, laboratories, etc., in order to qualify departments as physically adequate and personnelcompetent to receive and use radioactive materials. Travels to facilities when the environment includes exposure to radioactive materials. Performs highly technical reviews of radioactive sealed sources anddevices containing radioactive material requested to be certified safe for manufacture and distribution. Assists the Project Radiation Safety Officer and Radiation Safety team with project objectives. Leads and supports other Health Physics, as needed.

ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Directs testing and monitoring of equipment and recording of personnel plant area radiation exposure data.
  • Interprets results and identifies trends and outliers. Identifies and directs the need for additional surveys and/or samples.
  • Consults with scientific personnel regarding new experiments to define that equipment or plant design conforms to health physics standards for protection of personnel.
  • Composes comprehensive reports including summaries of surveys and findings. Reviews reports for technical accuracy.
  • Conducts research to develop inspection standards, radiation exposure limits for personnel, safe work methods and decontamination procedures and tests surrounding areas for making sure that radiation is not in excess of permissible standards.
  • Interfaces with managers and customers to explain radiological survey results and recommended actions.
  • Reviews and interprets radiation protection audits, surveys or inspection results and recommends corrective and preventative actions.
  • Performs as a technical consultant for health physics instrumentation and survey design.
  • Recommends instrumentation for situational use and develops associated procedures and training.
  • Reviews radiological control program efficiency and compliance with local and federal regulations.
  • Compiles radiological survey and sample data from multiple sources to create data tables, charts, and statistics.
  • Interprets results and identifies trends and outliers. Identifies and directs the need for additional surveys and/or samples.
  • Tracks progress of surveys, instrument calibrations, and other radiation safety needs.
  • Composes comprehensive reports including summaries of surveys and findings.
  • Reviews reports for technical accuracy.
  • Instructs personnel in principles regulations related to radiation hazards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

STARTING ANNUAL RATE OF PAY: $52,555.00 - $60,701.04 (Commensurate with experience & qualifications)

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in physical science (biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science or related),

nuclear medicine or nuclear engineering or a related field and four (4) years of related experience

required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS:

Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Solid understanding of health physics, environmental physics, calibrations, and analytical services
  • Strong process and analytical skills
  • Sound knowledge and experience applying the techniques of radiation monitoring, surveying, transport and disposal
  • Ability to relate to all levels of personnel in a collaborative manner, while setting priorities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft applications
  • Working knowledge of all legislation, regulations, associated standards and codes of practice relevant to radiation health

PERSONAL: Required to possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities that require performing tasks requiring wearing respirator, bending, stooping, kneeling, walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus, frequent traveling, prolonged standing, climbing stairs, and sitting at computer for long periods of time.
