Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Rad Onc - Preclinical Research Department, is seeking a Researcher IV.

General Responsibilities

Working with a high degree of independence:

  • To oversee projects within the laboratory
  • To assume responsibility for the day-to-day operation of lab activities.
  • To collect, enter, summarize, analyze, and interpret data.
  • To contribute significantly to the planning/design of studies.
  • To help develop long or short-term goals.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Our focus is on highly translational basic research projects in the mitochondrial / oxidative stress / DNA damage response fields. We have 2 primary projects. The first is NCI funded (K08) studying a new therapeutic target (cleaved ATP5A1) that is generated following oxidative stress. The second project that is investigating a differentially expressed isoform of Complex II that impacts oncometabolites fumarate and succinate that has a high translational potential related to hypoxia and lipid oxidative stress response (ferroptosis). R01s for both projects are in the pipeline with a 6 and 10 month horizons to submission. These are the focus areas: Cancer metabolism; mitochondria; electron transport chain; cell fate; DNA damage repair; bioinformatics
  2. Prior experience in cell culture and molecular biology is essential. We utilize western blot, digital PCR (dPCR), chromatin IP, 2D gel electrophoresis, Native PAGE, mass spectrometry, O2k fluorespirometry (electron transport chain measurements), and extensive plasmid/gene expression construct and cell line generation including with CRISPR/Cas9 gene engineering techniques. We also analyze our own RNA sequencing and other data. Preference to applicants with expertise in R.
  3. There are pathways to first authorship depending on project independence.
  4. Note that we do not do animal work (we are a cell culture-based lab).
  5. Preference to applicants who are looking to gain additional skills along the way to greater independence with future career goals.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Annual Salary Range $47,486.40 - $65,000.00

Qualifications

  • Doctorate in a related field
  • OR Master's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in related field and four (4) years of related experience
  • OR Associate's degree in related field and six (6) years of related experience

Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

  • Degree in a related field and have related work experience.
