ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR-INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD

Directs the planning, operations, and support of the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Ensures UAB compliance with federal and state regulations and institutional policies and procedures pertaining to human subject research. Interacts with federal officials. Develops, secures approval of, implements, and administers departmental goals, objectives, and budgets. Develops policies and procedures for assigned areas of responsibility in consultation with other departmental personnel. Implements and oversees changes in IRB office processing of human-use materials. Oversees human subjects training. Reviews and approves exemption applications, administrative amendments to human use protocols, revised documents, and panel requests. Manages staff

Key Duties and Primary Responsibilities:

  • Ensures UAB’s compliance with federal and state regulations and with institutional policies and procedures in areas of responsibility
  • Develops, secures approval of, implements, and administers departmental goals, objectives, and budgets
  • Prepares a variety of special and recurring correspondence and reports depicting departmental operations
  • Represents department and supervisor
  • Acts as a resource person on whom others rely
  • Interviews, hires, trains, evaluates the performance, and, when necessary, disciplines and discharges subordinate department personnel
  • Develops policies and procedures for assigned areas of responsibility in consultation with other departmental personnel. Regularly reviews recommendations of subordinates regarding changes in established policies and procedures
  • Reviews and approves exemption applications, administrative amendments to human use protocols, revised documents, and panel requests
  • Oversees, develops, and plans for filing of over 6,000 files as mandated by State and Federal regulations
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Salary Range: $81,525 - $132,475

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Must obtain a Certified IRB Professional (CIP) by the Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) within two (2) years of hire date. If eligible for CIP certification, must be certified within one (1) year of hire date.
