Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Department of Neurobiology, is seeking a Researcher IV.

General Responsibilities

Working with a high degree of independence:

  • To oversee projects within the laboratory
  • To assume responsibility for the day-to-day operation of lab activities.
  • To collect, enter, summarize, analyze, and interpret data.
  • To contribute significantly to the planning/design of studies.
  • To help develop long or short-term goals.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Sets up and performs routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals.
  2. Runs behavioral experiments in rats/mice, including self-administration and tests of cognition, anxiety, and depression.
  3. Performs surgical procedures in rodents.
  4. Maintains transgenic rodent colonies.
  5. Collects biological samples from rodents.
  6. Performs histology and microscopic imaging on rodent brain tissue.
  7. Collects, enter, analyze, and graph data according to established lab protocols.
  8. Monitors results; detects and reports unusual outcomes.
  9. Orders lab supplies and maintains inventory; maintains lab equipment.
  10. Performs basic statistical data analysis.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Annual Salary Range $47,486.40 - $55,000.00

Qualifications

  • Doctorate in a related field
  • OR Master's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in related field and four (4) years of related experience
  • OR Associate's degree in related field and six (6) years of related experience

Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Preferences

  • Prior experience working in a basic science lab is required.
  • On the job training is available, but candidates with prior experience with rodent handling and/or behavior, histology, and microscopy, and/or coding, even if exposure is only through laboratory coursework, are preferred.
  • Prior experience with transgenic rodent colony management, management of other personnel, and/or experience with specialized software is desired.
